‘London Calling’ at the 2024 Adelaide Fringe: A Cultural Explosion

Adelaide Expectation for the 2024 Adelaide Fringe includes numerous festivals and performances but this year’s centers on ‘London Calling’ which sets the cultural stage and makes a lasting impression. In the coming paragraphs, I am going to analyze the performance and try to answer the question of why this show is one of the most anticipated at the festival this year.

To blend Ability with Creativity is paramount

London Calling is not just a show, it is an artistic extravaganza featuring different talents such as music, theater, comedy, dance and many more. London performers bring the spirit of London to Adelaide, enlivening the environment. Leading them is Las Vegas magic practitioner who has become a household name in Adelaide’s Fringe Paul Dabek, and when he does his tricks he engages every one of us with his wonderful humor. Showman indeed! The cast is extraordinary, and they all work together: Sam Goodburn with his crazy jokes and impossible stunts; Antje Pode with her suitcase which she juggles, Charlie Caper is a magician; Chelsea Angell mesmerizes the audience with hula hooping while performing aerial stunts, and Shaunah Johnson does all this at the same time and adds something even more impressive. There is a very charming and skilful cast.

The Magic of Dabek

When Paul Dabek starts his performance on stage, it affects you in an unreal way, even if you are in the audience. He’s certainly a crowd pleaser, considering his ability to exude such energy. He is a British magician who somehow hails from the streets of London and has returned to show Adelaide just that: ‘London Calling’. This in itself is not merely a show but an opportunity to step into his realm of magic and comedy…

The Heartbeat of the Show

Fundamentally, ‘London Calling’ is a play that aims at merging funny bits with touching ones as intricacies that are in the context of human lives. The show’s narrative has an underlying pattern, almost like a spine that assists in providing the audience with a coherent tour that is both engaging and informative. Each act explores variations of relations and resilience, the grace of performance and its aims to inspire and unite (there are pictures of Pauls brilliant hand shadow puppetry feature in the show)

Standout Moments

One of the many noteworthy aspects of ‘London Calling’ is Charlie Capper ‘Bow Tie and Sam Goodburn skill to dress over a uni cycle while munching on something we refer to as yo-yo biscuits. The production values are in a class of their own complete with stunning lighting and sound design that matches the abilities of the performers.

Apart from that, it accords a sense of authenticity and vigor to the show that elevates it from being merely enjoyable to something that will never be forgotten by those who watch it.

Something to Bring the Audience Together

Perhaps the only real unique aspect of ‘London Calling’ is that it is appealing to a great number of viewers. No matter how different the person is, no matter what his/her passions and hobbies are, there is certainly something in the show that everyone can relate to. This speaks to the power of the arts. And as ‘London Calling’ is quite remarkable in this regard, it received a standing ovation on its opening night. The applause was not only for the show but for the idea of togetherness.

Audience Reactions

“London Calling evoked paranoia and laughter in equal measure, wow! The performers in London Calling are unbelievably talented, and they are quite hilarious. This is a must-see performance!” – Geoff W, Parafield Gardens, South Australia

“Fantastic, London Calling wins audiences from the start, as one of the best performers is the stylishly dressed veteran of variety Paul Dabeck. Who is not amazed by juggling cases, magic that leaves you in suspense, unicycle balancing, and a Lion King shadow act that’s heartwarming? This should be seen in this year’s fringe.” Kerrie A, Stepney, South Australia

Final Thoughts

There are plenty of reasons to be proud of the 2023 Adelaide Fringe and one is ‘London Calling’ which is a crown jewel of the festival. The very essence of the fringe is encapsulated: diversity, creativity, and energy. This should be unnerving for the uninitiated but regardless if you are a seasoned Fringe goer or trying your very first Fringe, this OneOpportunity show is quite literally close to your heart, urging you to witness the wonders of live entertainment like never before. Its essence is straightforward: amongst all the clamor in the world, arts is still something for hope and love. Reach out for such an incredible show.

Big thanks to Matt Tarrant who knows how to bring life to a GREAT production. Well done to Matt, Paul and Co.
