Every political documentary brings a different taste to our minds and every one of us cannot agree to either one. Today political documentaries are best perceived from the prism of the viewer. Their depth understanding and appreciation can be seen as an act of either cowardice or bravery, depending on which side of the political aisle the viewer occupies. With that being said, let’s go into one such oriented documentary, Dinesh D’Souza: Vindicating Trump.

The film begins as a suspense-filled thriller in the DNC war room. In the background, Trump is delivering, for the first time, one of his signature speeches. He said those famous words: ‘I’m running for president’, this time in 2015 on an escalator in his third property. That starts a battery of phone calls and Zoom meetings between the DNC, the unions and other shady wretches on how to destroy Trump at the ballot, at the press, at the law court and in various other ugly ways.

Next, we go to documentarian Dinesh D’Souza who explains the film’s goal-to unveil the truth about Donald Trump-who he is, what he has said in the past, and how he intends to run America if elected to the White House. D’Souza also introduces his lawyer Alina Habba, who describes Trump’s legal enduring struggle for his electability. There is also Lara Trump, who explains Trump as a family man. Then, Donald Trump himself steps in; he defends his policies and how he has been treated by politicians from both parties. He promotes his own ideals with gusto. In D’Souza’s words, America’s democracy is not under threat from Donald Trump’s presidency, but rather from the Democrats themselves.

“…tries to prove that President Trump is certainly not a threat to American Democracy…”

Let’s get straightforward. Trump has been defended through the lens of the movie, there is no escaping that (I mean the title does kind of say it all). My favorite style of documentaries is when the creator picks a topic, presents it, lets others speak for both sides, and makes audience reach their own verdict. This is not that case. To be fair, ‘other’ Donald Trump’s movies that we have received so far do not present that model too. #Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump, The Accidental President, Hello, Privilege. It’s Me, Chelsea… and many such other instances. Do you believe it is possible that we will receive a properly conducted and sensible critique of Trump’s Administration one day? Perhaps fifty years down the line.

Here’s what I like about Vindicating Trump: The ways the mainstream news media treats Trump are lies and the way the political analysts ask us to vote against Trump is a lie too. This is something D’Souza does and comes to cleanse Trump from false narratives that are always thrown at him. We know the Trump story where he mocks a disabled news reporter and where he quotes ‘good people on both sides’. The director easily refutes these claims using their quotes in full, as they appear in the actual speech. This film is made in order to show that President Trump is a different person and this is what he has been made out to be in the news and opinion shows.

Many viewers may find the whisperings of DNC operatives between skits and second-hand reports of Trump campaign ‘strategy sessions’ much like a poorly executed SNL-sketch. It doesn’t work for the left, and it doesn’t work for the right. Right, I’m not looking to persuade you in how to cast your ballot in November elections. I will review the film only from one angle: whether it’s worth the focus two hours of your life. It’s certainly D’Souza’s greatest strength–to know his audience and market to them. Therefore, one side will adore this film, and the other side will loathe this film.

The unvarnished truth is that I’m a supporter of Trump’s defense in a documentary film by the same name. Perhaps my opinion is that it would be better for you personally to go into the voting booth full of truths rather than having a bias drilled into their heads by their family and friends and the media. So, first gather the facts and then make the decision. I do this because you know how everyone around you will argue that I should never have watched this film How Trump Won, which glorifies the Dictator Trump. Isn’t it also interesting how people spend so much energy trying to dissuade you from watching something? Maybe it’s OK to watch it and make your own decision. You have my blessing to watch a documentary and not like it.
