In 2018, “The Real Bros of Simi Valley” was launched on YouTube for three seasons in succession. It displayed four adult males getting their act together as they have been out of high school for over 10 years. The series presented itself in a mockumentary format and satirical commentary on reality television programs such as “Jersey Shore” and “Real Housewives”. Now, “The Real Bros of Simi Valley: The Movie” on Roku also features the same four men in an inquest as to whether they have any contributions to show after a decade of absence at the rest of the school. To win the Truck of the Year title doesn’t seem to bother them and they will do almost anything to achieve this goal.
“Real Bros of Simi Valley: The Movie” revolves around four men in their early thirties but they behave like high school students and still dress like one. The supposed men in their school reunion also go along with the theme and aspire for the Truck of the Year title in a bid to be worthy.
“Real Bros Of Simi Valley” included four friends: Xander (played by Jimmy Tetro), Duncan (Nick Collette), Wade (Cody Co), and Bryce (Getter) from the suburbs of Californians. Over the course of three seasons, audiences witnessed how the four friends, plucked from boisterous adolescence, step into adulthood, made some life choices and learnt to take control over their lives. With Xan working at a garage and marrying Molly (played by Colleen Donovan), The former contestant of the show, Bryce few and far between, injured himself samba skateboarding; he was also embroiled in a silly quarrel with Xander’s kid. On the other hand, Wade & Duncan tried hard to “rebel against the fathers.” Duncan initiated a wave of rebelliousness by opening his surf shop whilst two of his two girlfriends Tessa (Monette Mooi) and Dani (Madeline Whitby) dumped him.
These ‘bros’ seem to constantly think of their golden years in high school when they were most sought after and didn’t have any chores in the world. Now, they are all grown up and have their man boys problems but they are making a living for themselves. In a rather foolish move, Xander goes out and buys a truck without consulting Molly. He rushes to his buddies and their significant others, saying there’s a disaster. Here, look at my new car, but the boys are impressed, not their wives. Molly bans Xander and threatens to end the relationship. But the next moment, what happens is even more surprising the news of an impending class reunion from the high school after ten long years soon comes about and they are all hyped up.
The members of Xander’s crew wish they could go back to their high school times which are much more easygoing than their current time. However, they have troubles within their present. Duncan is in a love relationship with two girls, Tessa & Dani, at a time. But Tessa and Dani are oblivious to that fact. Wade continues pretending to be an active pothead, at least he used to be at some point in his life. The son and grandson of ancestors wishing to win the Truck of the Year award, Xander wishes to achieve similar goals. When he is driving his own new truck, he looks at the big truck being driven by one of their old classmates, Matthew (Tyler Posey). Matthew enjoys showing off his brand new lifestyle. As a result, Xander and the other members of the squad begin to feel inferior.
At her house, Molly remains irritated by Xander’s purchase of the truck. Dani irritates Lexy (Monica Sherer) during their discussion by realizing the power of manifestation. Dani’s political enthusiasms while in the middle of a hug seem unnecessary to her. But she doesn’t communicate such emotions to Dani. Meanwhile, Johnny (Peter Gilroy) simply sits in the garden and eavesdrops on their arguments. He shields Duncan from revealing he is dating Dani and Tessa simultaneously. The group visits Matthew and Agoura (Zoey Dutch)’s impressive residence. Xander is at a loss for words when he sees Agoura’s body. He and Matthew boast to each other of their manhood and their power by the amount of weight they can lift.
At Matthew’s residence, Wade & Duncan have a sight of Shaunee White who is a public figure resting at the pool side. This brings up some strife as to how he got there. In the confines of their home, the team discusses how they are mere mortals compared to Matthew and his. In any case, they look forward to the end of holidays when they can be with their classmates whom they have been trying to imitate on social media. Wade changes his routine as well as his diet. Xander begins feeling inferior and therefore makes plans to acquire a bigger truck than Matthew’s. At the same time, a school instructor, Bryce, approaches the Principal, Mrs. Bundy (Retta) with the hope of promotion which would elevate his self esteem. However, she declined to appoint him as the Vice Principal.
Bryce takes time away from honing his ‘class’ in to raving about the plan that was sabotaged in front of his students. The students try to encourage him to assist them in getting those letters of recommendation for their intended colleges. Bryce believes this is a treasonous act. For this reason, he wants to change the grades he awarded for the entire class from the letter A to F. In the same instance, Dani & Tessa come to the conclusion that Duncan is in a relationship with both of them and thus break up with him. Agoura comes to meet Molly, Lexy, and Wade in an attempt to market her multi level marketing strategy. Molly calls it a ‘tunnel scheme’, and proceeds to create it. Xander has some losses on his business model of ball sack attachments on Cars and Trucks so as such he cannot customize his truck to be at the same level as Matthew’s truck. Afterwards, Wade discovers that Christian A Piece, his college roommate, Aldiss, is now romantically involved with his former girlfriend.
Bryce still dislikes Xander’s son, even though the son has grown and surprisingly looks older than them. While, Duncan tries to fix up his relations with Dani & Tessa, getting inspiration from the throple in Oliver Stone’s film ‘Savages’. Later, Dani gets her own podcast with Wade as she says that she ‘enjoys the timbre of her voice.’ Others are called ‘losers’ for engaging in unrealistic expectations of others. On the other hand, Molly’s real estate company is having a broker’s open house at Jatthew’s residence. Jatthew’s truck is also being stolen by Xander who uses her to scout Jatthew’s home up. This is how he intends to clinch the Truck of the Year award.
At the open house organized by Matthew’s, Agoura and her group of friends showcase their most recent achievements in sales so that Molly is made to feel insecure. Xander’s group clandestinely enters the house for the purpose of theft particularly to steal the truck. Molly is in the process of discussing selling their truck with him. The next thing she knows, Xander is right in front of her and speaking. He appreciates her strategy, as it suggests that he will get money for his truck related things. However, he pretends to be giving in to it because it was her wish. After some time, Matthew has Xander in Matthew’s house. Hence, Xander stops the plan to steal the truck. Wade however sees Tessa with her tongue down Bryce’s throat.
With no support from his father, Xander constructs the truck of his dreams with one of his co-workers and arrives at the reunion with his squad. They run into their former classmates and take the opportunity to show off their lives after leaving school. Then, the classmates share what they are up to and make Xander’s squad feel bad about their life choices. Wade is about to be kicked out of the party by Mrs. Bundy but Lexy kisses him claiming to be his date. Later, Wade introduces the rest of his squad to Bryce & Tessa. Duncan repairs relationships with Dani and resumes them but is spiteful toward Bryce for dating Tessa.
In the midst of heartaches and reconciliations, the members of Xander’s team get sentimental and decide that there is no use worrying over the needless trophy. But Matthew’s truck wins the award, which surprises them. Matthew comes in with his enormous truck and uncovers the plan devised by Xander’s crew to hijack the truck. Before the squabbles get out of hand, law enforcers come in to execute an arrest for Matthew & Agoura for their phony import and export businesses. The award for truck of the year rests on Xander squad owing to the arrest of Matthew. In the closing scenes of the film, Xander teams up with everyone else for the funeral of his son. But even then, their rivalry is no less intense as Wade goes for it.
Amidst this movie s dedicated to man boys, be it Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Kevin James or Mark Wahlberg, this overused trope made them famous. While earlier films like “21 Jump Street” and its follow up have been poking fun at these tropes. Billy Eichner also mocked how they have been stuck in that’s a wrap development by engaging with fake ‘gym bros’ in his street speaking. “The Real Bros of Simi Valley: The Movie” similarly makes fun of these tropes. However, it is more self referential than ever and that’s where some might feel let down if they haven’t watched the reality TV programmers which it references extensively.
Nevertheless, its laughable clichés are easily seen owing to the fact that they have been cliched in other mediums. One sees men showing off their absurd endowments and treating women as trophies. Also, women are a paradigm of stereotypical female promiscuity shows where they mostly pretend to be maturing toys for men and enjoy murderous gossip and jealousy. It fits in the narrative of the parody as it depicts people trying to be how they were in their teenage years in the present. They are frozen in those copies and do not grow up.
“The Real Bros of Simi Valley: The Movie” isn’t deep, and it isn’t meant to be deep either. It’s a stupid mock off of the stereotypes of a man child & trophy wife/silly girlfriend, that pokes fun of itself. People who get annoyed by the tropes may have a hard time getting into the film, making it hard to watch. But if you don’t care about the silliness, it is a good watch. It’s not shy in portraying its stupidity, it carries it with pride. It parodies the extreme emotions that can only be seen in reality television via self parody. Therefore, it will not offend the audience members who are fans of those programs. Rather, it will leave them and other viewers who are only familiar with the show format, in stitches for most of its run.
