The Last Breath (2024)

There is not much to be said for this Brit-directed suspense-thriller that features Levi as a stubborn captain searching for a sunken ship during the Second World War. As much of an underwater mess as this film is, it is equally disappointing that British actor Julian Sand would pass away while out hiking, while this role of Levi was one of his poorly directed films. He has given a mediocre performance and the unfair portrayal does make sense because who gets to decide what their swan song is? Owing to an injury prior to the filming, he loses the chance to shine and have a spectacular performance in this movie, as he was unable to dive and explore his acting skills. If we ignore all of this and imagine him on the ocean trying to dive into the waters wearing a red hat which looks like it was hastily crocheted for the occasion, all that comes to mind is nothing other than clothing dysfunctions. Levi is a block character and the fact that he is a British captain on a boat looking for a sunken ship adds very little complexity to the movie.

So shortly following their discovery of the wreck, Noah’s pals arrive from New York seeking a diving getaway, Levi is quick to charge one of the wealthy tourists a ridiculous amount of money for a glimpse at the wreck, and this purely selfish act on his part is rather shocking to say the least. Irrespective of this fact, Sam (Kim Spearman), who was Noah’s girlfriend in the past and a practicing doctor at present is possibly the most relatable character in the portrayal, as she dispensed sound advice to a child with a wounded arm and paid him twenty dollars in return for an old looking bracelet. It becomes clear right at the start that obnoxious, arrogant finance bro and now influencer Brett who plays Alexander Arnold is another dead man swimming. The fates of the supporting characters Riley, who is played by Erin Mullen, Logan, and Arlo Carter are not so clearly set by the conventions of the genre, but considering that they are all about to encounter a massive shark you shouldn’t expect too much.

As the oxygen tanks begin to run low, breath-holding starts to play a critical role in the story even more than before. Director Joachim Hedén does a fair job of increasing the suspense but then again most films on diving tend to be hindered from complete viewer immersion due to the cast needing to wear large features on the cue. And are the actors really the ones in the scuba? They could all just have been stunt doubles for all I knew because the in-mesh microphones permitted dialogues above water to sound studio-recorded crisp, which during median post production got to be completely falsified. Remove the sharks, and this one could probably be radio drama. To be honest, this might have been more effective.
