The most heartbreaking scenario however is the fact that every December this beauty comes to an end. As a result, the enchantment of the blockbuster summers has significantly diminished due to the presence of multiple massive tent pole franchises. It’s pretty crazy that by the time the months of May and June come, we have already had five to six big movie releases and summer has not even officially started yet. Factor in the streaming platforms and the sheer annoying nature of things that come with it and all of a sudden, the experience of going to watch a movie is certainly not what it used to be. This is precisely the reason why it is my favorite time of the year when the awards season of the movies takes place.
It is the time of the year that From around September to late December, the audiences are presented the very best movies of that year. While I can appreciate the brutality of a dull action movie, I can also appreciate the fact that there are some people who do want movies with deeper meanings and more thought put into them. Stories that I watch and savor are what I appreciate. That is why it is perfectly okay to place both John Wick 4 and Past Lives on the same list of favorite films. I long to see the entire range of colors in the cinematic rainbow and its multi color splendor.
And then there is January… This is another month that I feel I need to brings up at least once per review Asher’s book. That’s when the Hollywood hospice arrives, the graveyard of the film industry. Where all films go to die and later get resurrected into nice shiny blockbusters and high art. But first, before we can get to the good stuff, we have to wade through the trash dump of January 2024, it is out with Night Swim. I wouldn’t go so far as to call this film terrible. It is never a pleasant experience, it sometimes doesn’t seem to be deserved; there are times when a film is terrible and yet one can see where it could have worked. I am able to see some efforts in it even if the overall picture doesn’t focus on it. Night Swim is a lower tier authored film that smells of being a cynical cash grab. It’s about as riveting as a thesaurus and it’s as original as any Netflix actioner ‘spy’ movie ever made (those in the know will understand). It does not warrant the word terrible, simply because it is not that important that it would linger over peoples minds long after it was released.
Night Swim is an adaptation of one of the shorts about possible dangers involved which tend to arise from something as simple as a thought of getting into a swimming pool. Such inherent risks that come with something so harmless looking. Of course, one of the dangers associated with water is drowning, but there is some unique appeal that water provides and everything that exists underneath it, which is very intriguing but misunderstood nevertheless. And still, there are many ways to operate within this space. In my opinion, self-preservation is the chief reason to fear swimming in a pool, and I would say many can probably relate. I personally stand in opposition to the thought of swimming alone at night. Any other time I will wade into the pool at the very first opportunity and only get out far later. When day turns to night, I will still swim if the floor of the pool is visible but only if I am not alone. The thought of an inexplicable sea monster plummeting from the sky into the pool in Las Vegas really gets out of control feel so hostile. It can be the most ridiculous thing, but for some reason, I still do not feel comfortable with it.
I mention this because just before entering this theater, a good amount of the task was already accomplished. I was already tense because of the thought that I will have to sit through an entire movie based on the premise of something that I possibly fear, however true: that is the idea. I am the ideal target audience and I found out during the credits that such a movie is as dumb as its concept with small budget and huge profits strategy. They spotted a cash grab and that was probably as far as it went. Sadly this is evident on screen as there is no vision whatsoever. And that brings me to my next point, vision or in the case of Night Swim, a shameless thirty minute cash grab which you can extend to ninety minutes.
A lot of our understanding of what makes a great film is based on great films that have already been made. One doesn’t seek to duplicate The Godfather so much as one seeks to create something that has its essence albeit being completely different. You borrow from Aesop’s fables, add your flavor and with any luck create a masterpiece for others to emulate in the future. It is a well known fact that the grey area between respect for someone’s creation and shameless self plagiarism exists and it is only a touch of creative genius that enables one to be somewhere around that area. With Night Swim, they missed the plumb line with ‘super duper’ bad.
In its much lauded cinematic insults it’s willing to tag all of its story models as possessed horror and sloppy Amityville wannabe. It is almost as if within all of these calamities it attempts to copy one of Hollywood’s known failures The Shining. Not A Day sounds I could only struggle against. Is it able at least to recreate these well? Sand time makes one lose their core.
We understand that the best genre to kick-start a metamorphosis is horror but something else leaps with confidence in a decidedly unsophisticated fashion Night Swim is exactly what one expects in the genre during peak Blooms. Within a year it becomes so dull that a Tuesday in August sounds more appealing. Night Swim needs to focus on being buried under mounds of plastic reels that were forged by Hollywood and have little class and even less decency. These are films with stories, or maybe just engagements, maybe sequels, and aggravation is certain if that’s how WW consumes entertainment. appropriate for rage.
