Without a doubt, the B movie is not the encuesto. Rather, this is precisely what makes it even more interesting. At any exploitation movie lover will probably tell you, a really good Type B movie is a rarity. This is a great B movie, much more frenetic than the faded VHS titillations of the 90s. As for the genre, I recognize horror when I taste it. Just three licks in, and there is a delightful horror aftertaste you just can’t erase. It works through a horror film structure of anticipation and the ‘other’ that makes the attention almost always captured. This goes way beyond spanking, though you are going to get that too. Think 50 Shades of Grey but X meets Three on a Meat Hook. It’s a quick sick twisted thrill like all the chem cocktails that everyone in the film keeps gulping down as fast as they can. Yes, it is that kind of party where people drink drugged drinks willingly. The humiliating forced enema scene almost made me cry, so do take some hankies with you, unless of course you already have stacks!
Sex and nudity are both approached in a tasteful and restrained manner. While there are numerous instances where it could have been more objectifying, they chose not to do so. Some women’s push up bras peeking out of their maids’ uniforms while they are performing cleaning chores may seem like a lost opportunity to many people. However, it works really well here. Such moments in the narrative, when they are finally showing some nudity, have more meaning because of the fact that they do not overuse it. Seeing the movie, however, only adds to the already existing objective of providing real character growth. These include some very impressive actresses, for which We Are Wolves is packed. We now live in a world where everyone can safely wear this sleazy horror film on their cv, all thanks to Mallery.
Mares, in this case, is a work of art. Her emotional intensity builds up during the peak moments and explodes like a rogue laser. Winters isn’t so much of an actress per se but rather a performer of sorts which is precisely how a cult superstar is supposed to be. If most acting is second flute on the whole, Winters plays the role of a rad wailing and fuzzed out guitar that sounds amazing. You could imagine her doing it in a Warhol or Waters picture from the 1960s. I am very impressed by Kravchenko, she is both alarming and recognisable. It feels that she has long appeared in the frame, however, she is just coming into films after serving. Rather than approximating a wooden post which Selena is bound to for the masses to see, Selena allows one to catch peeks of her feelings amid the fences surrounding her every move. We Are Wolves is a post exploitation style that is fortified with a leather strut down the dark side that runs like electricity through a live wire all the way into the readers’ laps.
