Thundermans is a superhero family but after a mission failure that cost them their job of protecting the city, they find themselves either having to live like regular citizens or redeem themselves for their past failures.
The take
Even if it will probably provide more enjoyment for the fans of the Nickelodeon show airing from 2014 to 2018, The Thundermans Return is rather disappointing even for its nearly feature length. There are interesting concepts regarding family obligations and what a family ought to be, but any emotional engagement with the narrative is buried under bad action scenes and terrible jokes, some of which are made worse by a laugh track that is quite prominent throughout most of the film. There are teenagers and older kids who watch American superhero movies. And there are kids who are a bit younger than them who do not like to watch. This one doesn’t have enough visually relative characters for teenagers and older kids nor enough badly executed action for the younger kids.
What stands out
In one brief moment, the film introduces an angle that makes it a little more interesting: a new superhero family appearing as a Thunderman’s replacement who appears to be this perfect becomes less of a perfect towards the end. This unintended clash amongst this set of characters eventually comes across as being way more interesting than it ought to have been. By contrast, the Thundermans’ bickering with one another is trivial; it is futile, and does not translate into any violent showdowns or even moments of belated triumph. Perhaps this is too great an impression, but the film does believe in its heroes too much and forgets to bring them to life.
Movie review
The Thundermans Return is a movie that has been released for the first time on March 7. It is a continuation from the previously famous Nickelodeon TV series by the name The Thundermans.
The Thundermans, is a family television show that first started in 2013. It has the most funny twist when a family with superpowers decides to retire from being heroes and focus more on being a family–this is set in a Jones life family in Hiddenville who relocates to a new neighborhood and makes it very clear that they want to blend in to the lifestyle. The family eventually chooses to adopt a “normal” life in that particular suburb, until they decide to pursue a life as superheroes once again. The superhero family only appears in “the new town,” which is necessary for concealing their power.
The movie sequel, which is a family film, follows two integral twin siblings whose family was sent earlier to fliplock with their evil evil Bayern much to the regrets of everybody else–which then leads to their family once again hiding their powers resident and so chooses to live a normal life–blanket about. However, this time around, this lifestyle had excited the family to most of the members-except for a pair of siblings named Max and Phoebe who are self-declared superheroes and personalities with absolute determination to regain their powers.
It seems that audiences have received the movie well as it has an 82% audience score on rotten tomatoes. If I were to give them a score, it would be around an 8/10. There was one thing that annoyed me the most and that was the CGI. It was not ideal but it did not affect my appreciation of the rest of the movie. Others see the CGI as a positive aspect since it adds invokes nostalgia to the original program considering how awful the CGI in the original series was. One reviewer commented, “It feels like the original show, and I think that’s what they were aiming for.”
The new costumes appeared to be quite appealing. I do not think they changed it too much to the point of losing originality. I am happy that they have all the main characters from the TV series.
In my opinion, the movie’s plot was a little bit hurried but this did not bother me. If you enjoy watching longer films that have great plots, then this is not the movie for you. Because the movie appeared, it also had a cliffhanger effect which fosters the likelihood towards another sequel speculation. Some people are looking forward to this. Although these ideas do not appeal to me. I do not believe that I can wait for such a film after 5 years with poor graphics and shoddy story telling. I do think they could have done a little better, given the amount of time they had. Given my admiration for the original series, I’d be kind enough to give the movie an eight out of ten. One thing we can advise you–if you were not a fan of the TV series or did not seen it, then this film will not be for you.
