THE FIRING SQUAD is a docudrama film which stems from true life events chronicling three convicted prisoners who were to be executed in Indonesia in the year 2015. Kevin Sorbo takes the main role of Pastor Lynbrook. His character Lynbrook is an American prisoner serving a death sentence in one of the Indonesian prisons. Lynbrook tends to two newly incarcerated inmates, John and Samuel, who were also sentenced to death for drug trafficking offenses. John and Samuel were involved in an escape plan and, however, they were recaptured and returned to the institution. Pastor Lynbrook has faith and witnesses to both of them, and they become followers of Jesus Christ. Further, John begins dating an English Charity Casewoman who goes to visit and encourage the men on death row. Will the three men still be able to walk away with a sense of peace and fulfillment through Jesus Christ when all three are faced with the Firing Squad?
The sound for the dialogues in THE FIRING SQUAD is at times culture free and almost film academy content. There is need for additional music featuring in the movie for more intriguing sounds. Still,
the climax is really strong and hits hard. THE FIRING SQUAD does not shy away from promoting the Gospel of Jesus Christ during its entire runtime. The filmmakers claim that THE FIRING SQUAD is a dramatization of real events. It features Kevin Sorbo as an American former prisoner on death row in Indiana, who converts into a prison pastor, and James Barrington and Cuba Gooding, Jr. as new inmates sentenced to death. Sometimes THE FIRING SQUAD suffers from a lack of budget, but don’t skip this film–it’s ending delivers some great drama and depicts how the Gospel of Jesus Christ is life changing.
James Barrington stars in the story as an Australian businessman, John Lone, who smugly excites a drug kingpin in every country he visits. Running drugs–for John–is pretty much taking a vacation to a hot place full of babes until it gets particularly hot in Indonesia. It’s high time for him to leave the country, but just when he’s about to board a plane, the cops nab him.
In any event, the dominating Captain Tanu of the country’s solitary confinement if sentenced body in the death row prison, eeks after him in jail, smuggling and bossy. John, for his part, still maintains his innocence, claiming he neither produces nor sells the drugs in Indonesia. However, Yohanes has indeed been found guilty and can expect to be sentenced to death under the notoriously tough Indonesian criminal code on drug-related offenses.
While being imprisoned by Captain Tanu, John got into a fight with the man who facilitated the drug deal with the locals. The prison preached to John ”in the persons of Pastor Lynbrook (a character played by Kevin Sorbo) a prison chaplain who happens to be waiting for his turn to be executed. In the penitentiary, John learns that one of the inmates, a certain Samuel (Cuba Gooding Jr.) has an escape route. John and Samuel join their forces with another inmate. Their escape plan required them to dress as journalists at a time when they can be certain that a rookie guard will be stationed at the prison gate.
The escape plan has a dramatic build up then the time comes when it fails. During his time in prison again, captain Tanu locks John in a dark room with no food or water. There aren’t any vents: even a soup can’t get through the cells of the prison. Pastor Lynbrook, however, was not really going to try to barbecue himself with any of those twisps. He left the Bible behind. John gets it and is able to turn to Israel.
Moving under Pastor Lynbrook’s guidance, John strides through denial, anger, and depression to acceptance and meaning regeneration. It helps him to the very extent that he falls in love with a woman called Miriam who’s a foreigner and comes to the prison as a volunteer. She works to counsel the assassins awaiting their execution.
John has been updated on his sentence, and as time has passed, he has slowly realized the futility of such a wish. But can one find satisfaction through Jesus Christ and be at peace? Or instead, will he head out for a dead man’s walk towards the firing squad along with his new found friends in Christ, Pastor Lynbrook and Samuel?
In the case of THE FIRING SQUAD, the sound of the dialogue bothers some of the viewers who claim it does not have the right presence or dramatic flair one would expect from such a piece. It could benefit of the more musical or cinematic touch. Still, the conclusion is very compelling, leaving a lot to be desired. It is safe to say that THE FIRING SQUAD does not shy away from the message of Jesus Christ, as it preaches the Gospel throughout the entire runtime of the picture. It may sound odd, but John’s development throughout the motion picture has few themes different than simply gospel itself. John experiences all of the six stages. He has also suffered through extreme pessimism which is present during the movie, followed by sadness and depression only to return to a state of peace where Jesus was the source of comfort.
