Succubus, written and directed by R.J. Daniel Hanna, tells a young married man’s tempting experience of finding a partner through an app. The film is relatable to modern people since the story incorporates messages, video, application, and the website. Chris (Brendan Bradley) is a family man who is separated from his wife Sharon (Olivia Grace Applegate) who is partying with friends. Eddie (Derek Smith), Chris’s claim to fame bebe, advises him to download the app StarCrossed which allows him to explore the world of online dating.
Chris finds a few women on app, one of who is his professional counterpart, but this is the only Adra (Rachel Cook), a sexy target who dressed minimally, has a mysterious background who gets his full attention. As Adra was talking to Chris, the two started to tease each other which resulted in Chris being captivated by Adra’s words. But some further worries are raised at this moment when Adra commits to Chris that she is an evil person and intends to trap him forever. Ambiguously Adra is being chased by her stalker, Dr. Zephyr (Ron Perlman) who knows Adra is a soul-sucking succubus. Will Chris ever get out of this mess with the assistance of Dr.
Zephyr? Or is Adra claiming him already, binding him to her for eternity?
Hanna builds a universe full of sexy passions, which one could compare to The Red Shoe Diaries. Many genre films often avoid addressing sexual moments except for in mock or third-person viewpoints. Succubus displays coitus through soft leather ripping off and exposing lace underneath. However, it is just enough for you to comprehend what is transpiring without it degenerating into the extreme, which is critical for the plot. It helps advance the story and is well-executed but remains sensual.
The figures on the stage pleased the audience. Brendon Bradley’s character hails from a world of wicked sex where he carries with him childlike sadness in the parallel world however gets turned on and excused shamnistic behavior while still in it. He saw that he had crossed way over the line and looked for a way out. Even Derek Smith’s Eddie, who plays the part of the whimsical contrast to Chris’s more ordinary person rather well, did quite a good job. Olivia Grace Applegate keeps looking ethereal all the time but there is an anxious fragility about her, almost a sense that she is unwilling to part with Chris.
Rachel Cook has a devastating look and a bearing that moves with an apparent overt sexual undertone. Still, her will never come off as crude, and she expertly conceals the threat until the time of revealing her true form. In addition, Light has a distinct resemblance to Cook due to the thickness in her voice and an eagle like face that looks like an ideal sculpted feature, while Cook’s eyes make you think of Horne while singing Honeysuckle Rose. Perlman comically takes on Dr. Zephy’s reasoning voice as he unsuccessfully attempts to negotiate with Chris. Moreover, Rosanna Arquette is quite charming and making every effort to dot on Chris even if he is a father but a fully grown man, has its fair share of concerns, the same makes her study too engrossing. She makes some pretty memorable jokes.
Succubus is a fable intended for the tech-agers. It builds up tension well with the warnings of one night stands and what they relate to, for this time Lucifer is out to get into you. And as the clever tagline has it, “Swipe right, and she’s got your soul.”
