Entertainment Squad together with Cherchez La Femme and Outrageous Films produced this film. Peter Woodward is both the writer and director of the film. Ben Matheny and Laura Singleterry produced the movie while Kathleen Garcia did the cinematography. Jon Perry was in charge of editing. Virginia is a newcomer in New Orleans and already one of her plans does not go that well. What is supposed to be a date in fact turns out to be a con and Virginia happens to dodge Jake. They appear to hit it off and Jake invites Virginia back to his place so she can unwind. Coming from a traditional family, Virginia starts to come to terms with the fact that Jake lives in a shared house with raging polyamorists. She is troubled by the situation at first and she had hunches maybe she might not ever turn up again.
Though, Virginia is a jobless evictee. She persuades the house owner, Candy, whether she can occupy the house for a while. Candy agrees, and in no time, she finds herself in an unfamiliar place. Virginia discovers, with Jake as a guide, that polyamory is all about sexual possibilities without limits. Even while going with Jake to sex clubs, Virginia gradually begins to be drawn to the young man on the other hand, despite his desire, Jake has commitment issues. Can Virginia assist Jake in confronting his phobia of love and in taking a leap into a relationship?
This is a funny, crazed comedy written, directed by Peter Woodward and combines romantic comedy and dirty pictures of the late 80’s and 90’s. The film can be compared to the 2000’s Lukas Moodysson feature’s title Together, that focuses on relations within groups of people as they are strangers at first yet one chooses to be with the group a member of a commune. The thing is, sex and polyamory are incorporated here, portraying a quite legitimate audience of the matter under discussion. As for Katherine Ellis, she is quite ok as Virginia, who can be said to be a little conceited courtesy of her coming from conservative Christianity and wanting to break free from it.
First, we see her in the vehicle of a man she slept with. Or rather, she thinks he is the owner of the car, while in fact, he is just a rental car dealer and the lady is having regret in her heart for her actions. During the movie, we witness how she becomes more and more relaxed, gradually getting more comfortable in her skin, revealing it slowly and calmly over the course of the film. Now Aaron Long is further raising the bar as Jake who openly practices polyamory yet is insecure about tying the knot. In this lifestyle, he becomes a guide for Virginia but the side characters have interesting enough traits that make everything effectively work during the film which contains a plethora of pornography and sex. Some of the actors get quite dramatic in their acting approach and those tendencies can be observed in a few moments and on other occasions, there are now sincere concern for the remaining polyamorous residents which works in this case. Even the writer director himself appears in the episode when Virginia is invited by Jake to a sex club and after sex, he explains how exactly he views such lifestyle.
Sex-Positive could easily be seen as a low budget pornographic movies. Nevertheless, it is all about the polyamorous world and love and friendship interlaced with a great plot about two people who are in search of something in their lives.
