MR. CROCKET is a horror film that has recently been released on Hulu. I had high hopes for this film, as I expected it to entertain me. Jerrika Hinton is one of the stars of this film, and for those who do not know, I think she is brilliant. In this case, there isn’t much she can do to rescue it.
It is short of one hour and thirty minutes the actual film is about 83 minutes long excluding credits but it seemed like a much longer film. I do not know, but the plot just did not connect with me. Is it the story or the presentation of it, I still cannot figure out.
How Mr. Crocket talks to children?
The year is 1993 but the action of Mr. Crocket is set in 1994, which is the present time of the movie. This is the time when the events featuring our principal character (Jerrika Hinton) take place.
It revolves around the character Mr. Crocket, the host of a popular children’s show who can appear from any television. He has a special magic trick: he first abducts little kids, kills their parents, and then we see him.
In addition to that, I have to praise this film for its beautiful practical effects. These quite surely achieved what they set out to do. Sadly, you never seem to find time to sympathize with the children or the majority of the parents for that matter.
Because of this, it is rather clear that the audience is merely going through the motions in a mechanical manner.
We follow a mother our protagonist who is heart broke when Crocket the Great takes her son away from her. To get her son back, she tries to find the source of this possessed and otherwise insane clown.
Mr. Crocket most obnoxious children;
A big (massive!) problem in this is that her son is plain horrible. Like, the brat of all brats and it about put me over the edge. So much so that I was glad when he was taken and thought to myself, “alright good riddance to that little brat.” I know any parent would absolutely (well, most!) think of this. But I had no issue thinking like this.
And that does pose a problem. I have no stake in the mother’s quest and when other people as well in the search of the strange host of children’s TV show join her it is not very good at all.
Without a doubt, every actor plays their role. Jerrika Hinton (Hunters) effectively plays a woman who uses tough love and has a witty mouth which I appreciate, but in general the mood of the film seems to put a lid on her force. Also, Elvis Nolasco as Mr. Crocket is great to watch… but this still does not assist the movie to much.
Most of the time, he sounds like Bill Cosby, and that has become a peculiar type of horror nowadays. I wouldn’t lie, I still picture that voice as belonging to a loving and humorous father figure. Then I remember the many proofs exposing the truth about him and that warmth vanishes almost instantly.

Mr. Crocket was in main stream by a not so talented as himself yet Brandon Espy who is one of the youngest actors in the world. The screenplay was written by both him and Carl Reid as well including the previous mention of the young director himself. It’s based on a 2022 short of the same name written by and directed by Brandon Espy for Hulu’s Bite Size Halloween.
I do understand what they meant, why they decided to bring this as a feature movie. However, it appears to me that it lost its center and soul if it had one at all. This is not exactly something we hear frequently when transitioning from a short film to a feature, but it’s still unfortunate.
Regrettably, despite her best attempts, Jerrika Hinton’s story never really resonated very deeply with me. Given the subject of children being packed and parents being murdered, it wouldn’t have to be too.
Even the twists in the plot are quite boring. I found myself losing focus and my thoughts wandered a bit through the course, but I still managed to predict the outcome. I simply anticipated far more from this film. And yes, that is of course part of the reason why I am quite disappointed.
