Stating that “Hummingbirds” is a mere documentary would feel like a disfavor to this masterpiece. It is the result of first-time directors and best friends Silvia Del Carmen Castaños and Estefania “Beba” Contreras and is more than just that. An artistic representation of their relationship, a summer bestie romp filled with scandals, an informal immigrant narrative along with a call for action, this sublime movie is many movies in one which makes it hard to place in a single category. While dancing, singing, and causing trouble, Silvia and Beba seem to be tempting you to stereotype them, their struggles, and their lives in a border town.
The movie “Hummingbirds” wasn’t directed in order to have any structure or coherent plot and was filmed in the summer of 2019 While showcasing Mexican immigrants Silvia and Beba’s struggles to survive in a desolate Texas border town with a shocking flimsy narrative, Hummingbirds follows two women’s lives Beba’s and Silvia’s. Beba’s life has been filled with these specific cocktails of jokes and giggles, more so of her fond memories like nights she spent riding her mother’s shoulders. However, it was also accompanied by getting sideswiped by immigration think of it not being a dream that you can’t do. Beba waits eagerly For updates on her application. Who doesn’t undergo things that let them reclaim their childhood? Together the two highlight and showcase quite important issues that have gone unnoticed for long, or as an opposer imagine.
Visual arts unite, inspiring growth friendship and amorousness are some traits that can be captured through the lens of “Hummingbirds”. There is an abundance of conservatism and a lack of depiction of the central characters in a film. In a bet, they are sorely missing and in rectifying this, the film seeks to deliver strong messages. For starters, it is Silvia who informs the audience that the group sometimes impersonates cheerleaders. Above all, there is a lack of Parton characters who fully partake in the deep production of this film which is meant W to shed light on significant social issues. And at its core women undergoing abortion.
Although touching scenes between Silvia and Beba exist, as well as entertainment scenes, “Hummingbirds” is hilarious. It feels like we’re being let into a secret club, running alongside them as part of their team, devouring street food, splitting shots, getting inked, being young. The Indonesian bikini car washes are probably best left unrecalled, but there was never a moment I laughed harder than during a particular scene where the two girls ring bingo wearing some ridiculous over-the-counter sunglasses, interrupting the other players and Beba’s mother, who is very displeased about it. Afterward, when Jeffrey has his birthday party and they go out bowling, I notice a shift in Silvia and Beba, they pause the adulting for a while at least for one night.
Even though Silvia and Beba inquired from seasoned filmmakers while making their first shot film, the ‘Hummingbirds’ does not strike as the work any person other than them could have made. They explain their narratives in the manner that best suits them, and the honesty and sheer truth of a community that is often maligned by inland waters rush television serves only to impress the most casual moviegoer. But if Hummingbirds achieves anything, it is to demonstrate in an entertaining manner that is also thought-provoking to all of us that immigrants are also present here, living through the intricate facets of life, only trying to survive just like each one of us. And smile they do! Silvia and Beba show that it is possible to achieve everything whilst maintaining a perpetual smile.
