Cocaine Werewolf

Cocaine Werewolf

The world was introduced to the horror comedy, Cocaine Bear a while ago and everyone hasn’t stopped talking about it ever since. The premise of a bear finding cocaine and turning into a savage beast is quite solid. In fact, it should have been a cornerstone idea of that set of films. Imagine the golden age of drive in movies and witnessing a double feature of high on drugs animals chasing after humans.

Anyway, after Cocaine Bear hit the screens, so many people have watched films with similar premises, from Mitigator to coconuts that have cocaine in them, from cocaine sharks to crack cocoons. A few weeks back, I was sent a press release for Mark Polonia’s film which I had not expected to come across. Cleopatra Entertainment informed me about their future plans to launch Mark Polonia’s ‘Cocaine Werewolf.’ Although that wasn’t one of the films I was anticipating, I knew I couldn’t let that one sneak past me. I got in touch with them and they were gleeful enough to send me a review copy. Special thanks to MVD and Cleopatra Entertainment for sending me a review copy.

Spoiler Alert In the film, a haggard stock broker with a penchant for cocaine finds himself in the woods where he stumbles upon a horrifically disfigured man. This random encounter results in the horrendously disfigured man becoming a hairy, slobbering werewolf who has to wander the dark nights. At the same time, filmmakers are shooting a clown movie and cross paths with the snorting cigarette smoking werewolf. Spoiler Alert

For me, a Polonia film is precisely hit or miss. I appreciate the low budget stories and the nonsensical narratives at times, but other times it’s very obvious the film was made in a hurry in order to capitalize on some hip trend without considering its quality. As I was looking forward to a coke driven werewolf movie, I assumed it to be one of those so called cheap and hasty productions cashing in on the drug horror boom. I was wrong. I actually enjoyed this one more than I was expecting to.

The acting in this one could have been better, but I had fun with it in most parts. There were some characters who had more of a focus, etc. There are good characters so, the cast had something to perform. To counter that, some of the characters are painfully two dimensional which resulted in poor performance by the actors who played them.

The plot for this one is pretty simple, yet enjoyable. There are no new ideas in this movie, but it is these chintzy moments and no budget that makes things fun as they are. I wasn’t expecting a bear to be replaced with a werewolf of all things, and while it isn’t a typical werewolf film, it kept me interested for the entire movie. The only downside I would have about it is that I would have liked a little more information about the werewolf, but it works as is.

Lastly, the movie utilizes a rather bad werewolf mask and some cheap and few gags. There are occasional blood splatter and there are some kills, but nothing great.

Cocaine Werewolf is hands down the best film I’ve watched recently. However, I know that some of you will immediately run to the comments section and scream that this review has been paid for by Mark Polonia and Cleopatra Entertainment. It hasn’t and I personally had a good time. Of course, it would have been great to witness more impressive acting and hardcore gore but it is what it is. Cocaine Werewolf is to coked out stoke brokers what Wolf cop is to an alcoholic cop. This one is a must see, get it if you can.
