Big City Greens the Movie: Spacecation

The Green Family finally has sufficient savings for a road trip but instead of the one planned for last summer, Cricket takes them all on a space adventure that quickly goes awry. Oh and it is a musical as well!

HOW DO WE SEE IT

Watching over the last week a number of items that in some way were related to a number of shows that I have not watched, and rather unsurprisingly, feeling disconnected or out of touch regarding quite a few things that I was not aware of in the first place which of course influenced positively or negatively one’s ability to appreciate what was being witnessed at the moment. To my great surprise, this is not the case with Big City Greens the Movie! Of the latest Disney animated series, I was more inclined to the more dramatic arcs such as Those Who Came and The Owl House (who really needs a movie more but I will not dwell there), and so I never watched much of “Big City Greens” apart from select few clips here and there or the infrequent chances I got to review it. That said, I always had the impression that I would probably enjoy it if I did.

Fortunately, this movie has been constructed with newer or less experienced viewers in mind so that even if you have never seen the show before, or very little like me, one can just get on with it and be able to easily comprehend just about everything that the show has to offer apart from some of the more continuity laden bits.

In this instance as the title suggests, the caper started when the hard-headed Greens went on a space vacation, unwittingly realizing the sketchy aspirations of a crazy technocrat and things kind of flow from there. All of the main cast get some fun thing to do but character stuff really is about Cricket who goes on adventures to enjoy himself on holidays sometimes at the cost of his family and father Bill who on other hand strives for the safety of everyone. I don’t know how often the two perpendicular perspectives meet in the main show, but in this case the conflict is dramatic and satisfactory particularly because it is not about the family film only and its nuances are nicely blended with the themes of risk and conservativeness depicted through other characters. And as already noted, the song was conceived with musical embellishments intended almost from the beginning of the confrontation which suddenly matters for television for some time, so it is good to know that something positive came out of this.

Additionally, let’s be honest with ourselves here, I personally really enjoy this brand of humor on animation, as it was the case with Amphibia, so that’s always a plus. Maybe after knowing that this movie exists, I will explore this entire series, but for now, I would say watch it even if you have never watched a single episode. But then, Disney, please make a movie out of Amphibia and Owl House, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. You could even make it into a picture with music, stop pretending as if you’ve never considered it!
